Ally’s imperious travellers can’t be stopped
Maybe Ally’s got himself mixed up. You see, the way it normally goes down is you win all your home games and you struggle away. You make Ibrox a fortress. You’re not – in anyway shape or form – meant to go to Hearts and win 2-0, having scraped a 1-1 draw at home to St. Mirren.
Ok, I’m not complaining- I doubt many Rangers’ fans are.
But some of the stats the Rangers’ Twitterati produced, after another fine display on the road on Sunday, were just as shocking as they were salubrious. “22 SPL games unbeaten, scored 51, conceded just 6, with 17 clean sheets and 1,190 mins since we last conceded a goal away from home,” laughed a buoyant Rangers Supporters Trust on Facebook. 139 people like this; you’re damn right they do.
And I’m sure most of RST’s 8,000+ strong Facebook fan-base didn’t just ‘like’ seeing Nikica Jelavic guide in Carlos Bocanegra’s sensationally weighted long-ball, I bet they friggin’ loved it. Having soaked up quite a bit of pressure and applied some ourselves occasionally, I was wondering whether one was enough. Especially at Tynecastle.
But to seal the points, came a sumptuous moment of dexterous pleasure.
‘Captain America’, deducing the length of the hosts’ half with a mere flick of his boot, seemed to know, more than anyone who’s watched the Croat, what Jelavic is capable of. As soon as he gets that half-a-yard, you’re done for. Goal. 2-0.
Not bad for a club in crisis, eh?
So when’s the next ‘challenge’? Aberdeen away? Easy. Dundee United at Ibrox? Not a problem. Celtic after Christmas? Please. I scroll down the fixture list (one annoyingly devoid of continental contest) and suddenly I’m at the bottom. Oh, is that it? This may seem rather brazen but the truth is, I’ve never been so confident as a bluenose. As far as I can remember.
Perhaps you may argue we haven’t looked like world-beaters in our latest matches. There’s nothing so abruptly impressive about our slender defeats of Hibs, Killie and Dundee United. The St. Mirren draw may also add a certain fuel to your flames. But that’s beside the point.
I haven’t seen a team in the SPL – whether playing against us or someone else – that could beat us. All is needed, in that case, is a consistent focus, a drive to win every game – however small – and on-top of that, a continuously positive team morale. Combine these and you’ve got an unbeatable team; on paper.
Even an early-season injury crisis doesn’t quake my boots. I sometimes forget we have the likes of McKay, Bedoya, Wylde and Fleck all itching for a place. Not to mention the delightful battle for the left-back position.
Maybe I am getting ahead of myself, maybe my feet are slowly levitating a few inches of the ground, but the fact of the matter is this; when the fans are happy, the team is doing something right.
A wise man once said, “where there is unity, there is victory,” and for once, I didn’t nick that quote from Google.
