Ex Wednesday stars out to clip Owls wings
Sheffield Wednesday have risen to within touching distance of the top two in League One with three consecutive victories.
The Owls have a 100% record at Hillsborough this season and after a slow start away from S6 they have picked up back-to-back wins on their travels including Saturday’s impressive 1-0 victory at previously unbeaten Hartlepool.
The next team to put Wednesday’s perfect home record to the test will be near neighbours Chesterfield and Wednesday will hope that the curse of the returning old boy doesn’t come back to haunt them in more ways than one.
Chesterfield are managed by former Owls midfield playmaker John Sheridan, a key member of the successful Wednesday team in the 90’s and rightly held in legendary status by the Hillsborough faithful, not least for his stunning winning strike in the 1991 League Cup Final victory over Manchester United.
Sheridanwill no doubt receive a warm welcome on his return but he will be eager to enhance his managerial reputation further this season having guidedChesterfieldto promotion in the last campaign.
The Spireites also have some more recent Wednesday connections within their playing staff. Drew Talbot, a goal scorer for the Owls in the 2005 play-off final is likely to feature. Leon Clarke, a less popular figure during his spell with the club between 2007 and 2010 is also expected to play having got off to a flying start following his loan move fromSwindonwhere he fell out with manager Paolo Di Canio.
The following weekend sees Wednesday travel to bitter rivals Sheffield United managed of course by ex-Owl Danny Wilson.Wilsonplayed alongsideSheridanin the Wednesday midfield and was an integral part of that successful period. The formerNorthern Irelandinternational returned to Hillsborough in 1998 to manage the club but after a solid first season in charge things went downhill quickly in 1999 and he was dismissed shortly before the Owls suffered relegation from the Premier League in 2000.
Wilson’s appointment at Bramall Lane raised more than a few eyebrows to say the least due to his Wednesday connections but a good start to this tempered some of the ill-feeling amongst Blades fans. United have faltered a little in recent weeks with the doubters beginning to raise their voices, a Sheffield derby victory may appease them somewhat but a home defeat would pile the pressure on the former Wednesday midfielder.
