Frustration levels mounting at Goodison
Another two points lost at home, Fortress Goodison is a distant memory and for many fans this all adds up to doom and gloom and renewed calls for the head of David Moyes. Well they would, wouldn’t they? The tactic for all Premier league visitors to Goodison this season is simple, negate the forward runs of Leighton Baines, defend deep and if you snatch a goal then it’s three points thank you very much and let’s get back on the coach.
What’s more, it is working very well, and Paul Lambert probably thought he had stolen the prize on Saturday. One shot, one goal. Everton had 15 shots on target, 13 off target, 13 corners to the Canaries nil and nearly got away with it. Fortunately for the Blues the inspired substitutions of Straqualasi and ‘Gorgeous Gus’ Drenthe brought a much deserved equaliser. Indeed Ruddy also had a great game on his return to Goodison although he was mighty fortunate when a Gorgeous Gus thunderbolt struck him on the forearm and somehow cleared the crossbar. At the other end Tim Howard was an interested observer as usual, he’s only had to make 1 save in the last three games but Everton have only 1 point to show – quite a remarkable statistic!
The lack of a class striker is costing Everton dearly at the moment and until this particular conundrum is resolved they will continue to frustrate the vocal minority. The phone ins are full of the Moyes Out brigade and Sack the Board. The point is that Everton are not producing the goods although playing well and the Opta Index statistics prove it. If David Moyes had £20m to spend then who would he buy that could guarantee 15-20 goals per season? The armchair critics get stumped at this point, they also fail to see the impact of the financial recession and expect a Russian fairy godmother to ride to the rescue even if the current board did fall on their sword. Quite simply many have lost sight of reality and just want to criticise David Moyes and Bill Kenwright. Maybe the return of Landon Donovan in January will spark the usual revival in the second half of the season that has now become customary under Moyes tenure but I fear the frustration may get worse before it gets better. Swansea next up on Wednesday and they don’t leak many goals either do they?
