Guidetti set to shine
John Guidetti scored for Feyenoord again at the weekend, his 18th goal in 14 starts for the club where everything he touches is turning to gold and goals. So much so in fact that thousands of fanatical Feyenoord fans have signed a petition calling for the club to keep him at all costs. However they won’t have much choice because City own him and it’s possible that he’ll return at the end of the season to fight for a first team place.
At least that’s what I hope will happen as it’s vital for Mancini to prove that he can bring through a player from the youth team and integrate him into the first team squad on a consistent basis. Since taking charge in December 2009 Mancini has given first team debuts to 10 young professionals who all dreamed of making it big at City. 6 remain at the club (including Guidetti) yet all out currently on loan furthering their development in the hope that they catch Roberto’s eye. Of course Mancini has had vast sums to spend and success is expected instantly so why would he gamble on an unproven youngster when he can purchase a proven performer? Well, UEFA’s financial fair play initiative means that City need to blood some of the talented youngsters at their disposal to cut costs where they can. John Guidetti looks ready to be the first to break through.
One of the things in Guidetti’s favour is the fact that he plays as a striker, a position that City have had issues with this season thanks to Carlos Tevez’s petulance. Guidetti certainly looks as if he has the hunger and the talent to fill the gap without costing the club a penny. Strangely it looked as if he’d left last summer to sign for FC Twente, then came the news that he’d actually signed a new deal and was instead going to spend the season on loan at Feyenoord. So Mancini obviously rates him in some way and his goalscoring exploits this season will not have gone unnoticed at the Etihad.
He has everything required to succeed at the top level, strength, technique, tenacity and an eye for goal. He’s scored three hat-tricks this season already and two of them have come against Ajax and FC Twente two of the best sides in the Eredivisie suggesting that he’s a big game player. However it’s worth noting that he also got himself sent off after his last goal, a 77th minute penalty, because he decided to take his shirt off to celebrate and he was already on a yellow card. The last thing Mancini needs is someone to rival Balotelli for unnecessary suspensions!
I hope at the very least that he gets to play for City at least once more because the only game he’s featured in so far was a dreadful 2-1 defeat to WBA in the Carling Cup last season. I’m convinced that given the chance, Guidetti will shine.
