It’s time to forget about promotion at Elland Road
It may not be what every fan wants to here, but it’s time the talk of promotion stopped. I’m not saying it’s the fans’ fault, they’ve been fed talk of ‘we can still do it’ throughout the past 12 months now, but the whole outlook seems bleak.
Managerless and pennyless, one our best players is due to return to his parent club within the month, and the list of quality managers available appears to be falling every day. Even Warnock looks more likely to go to Huddersfield now, despite being odds-on for the Leeds job on more than one occasion. Even scarier though, is 10 players could be leaving the club in the summer as their contracts run out and their loan spells expire. How does this bring stability to a team? The perils of overusing the loan system have been seen in Sheffield United, and Cardiff City have improved since a similar realisation.
There needs to be some serious investment in the squad over the summer if ambitions are going to be reached, but what evidence is there that will happen, none. How many players of real quality for this division do we have left now? Snodgrass certainly, McCormack, perhaps, but that’s where the list stops. This may sound rather depressing and defeatist whilst the team are still only six points from the play-offs, but when was the last time we had some real positive news to shout about?
I’m tired of hunting in the bargain basement for unwanted players from the Championship or ageing players from the Premier League. I even find myself jealous of Peterborough United, at least they can pick the best young players from the lower leagues, pay good money for them and then sell at a profit on their own terms.
I’m totally prepared to be proved wrong, but I think we’re in for a hard season next year, at the wrong end of the table.
