Megson makes a case for the defence, now it’s time to go on the offensive
Sheffield Wednesday started their pre-season schedule of matches with a creditable 0-0 against Russian top-flight side Fc Volga Novgorod on Tuesday evening. The Owls will now return home from their training camp in Austria and with little more than three weeks to go before the start of the Football League season, the manager is intent on working on improving the Owls’ attacking prowess.
Commenting on the game Gary Megson stated “We kept a clean sheet which was good but I can’t remember us causing their goalkeeper too many problems and that shows where we need to improve.”
Wednesday have looked to ensure they have a solid base to work with by signing two combative midfielders in the shape of David Prutton and Jose Semedo as well as adding centre-back Rob Jones to their ranks.
As the new season approaches fans will be anxious to see who the club can attract in terms of attacking options to help justify their position as one of the favourites for promotion from League One.
No secret has been made of the clubs interest in Preston striker Neil Mellor after he scored 20 goals for the Owls on loan last season but the protracted nature of discussions about his potential move to Hillsborough is making it seem like Wednesday may have to look elsewhere to fill the void. With Paul Heffernan having also left the club in the summer the Owls only have two experienced strikers in the shape of Gary Madine and Clinton Morrison currently on their books.
Rochdale striker Chris O’Grady, who lives locally, is another player who has been linked with a move to Hillsborough and the Owls have also been hunting to bring in a winger to add to their attacking options. Danny Green opted to stay in London by signing for Charlton and Leicester City’s Lloyd Dyer has intimated that he is not interested in a move away from his current employers.
Megson will be hoping to get new faces in as soon as possible in order to get them up to speed with the Owls pre-season training and to integrate with the rest of the team so there may be a determined push on this front in the next week or so as they return to home soil.
