More praise for our academy

by Neil S avatar

Following on from last week when I spoke about the impact our Academy is having, and to be fair has had on our club in recent years, step forward another in the production line in Sean Murray.

This youngster, who scored against cash rich Leicester, showed what can be nurtured and helped in a club our size. Watford have had a number of players like Sean who the club have seen some good potential in, One such player a few years ago was a player who had everything going for him in his favour, all except what was being whispered in his ear away from the club.

So instead of a then fifteen year old staying with the club that had belief in him, he was told he maybe he deserved better than Watford and he decided to move to a premier league Academy, because as he thought he would be a Premier League player and why not? After all it’s all about ambition right? Unfortunately for him it was a gamble that did not pay off, he is however playing for a league club but lower down the divisions, and Watford did get some compensation when he moved. If only he had the strength of character to listen to a club that in most cases knows what it is talking about, he could have made his desired move to the top table of football in England.

Of course it may not of happened but I am sure if he had stayed and not listen to people who turned his head he would have had more of a career and chance, for a recent example step forward Marvin Sordell who recently left us for Premier League Bolton. Everyone benefited from Marvin staying, he gained a reputation from hard work and performances and earned his move, the club got much needed finance and some important goals from him in his time in the first team, and us fans saw a player who deserves to be in the top flight who we saw from a raw youth player move onto England under 21 them onto the Premier League.

Sometimes the grass is not always greener away from Watford. Lets hope other youngsters at the club look at Marvin and follow his lead. Besides watching our team beat the money bags of Leicester last night makes following your team even sweeter.
