New season fixtures set to reignite interest
2010/11 may not have been the greatest season in Sheffield Wednesday’s history and the prospect of another campaign in the 3rd tier of English football will have done little to raise spirits at Hillsborough.
However, with no international tournament to fill footy fans appetites during the summer the release of the forthcoming season’s fixtures next week will no doubt generate great interest and debate.
Despite last season’s disappointments a new dawn brings with it renewed hope and there will be plenty to whet the appetites of Owls fans when the fixtures are revealed. The most anticipated games of the season will be the return of the steel city derbies following Sheffield United’s relegation to League One.
Both teams will be expected to challenge for promotion and the appointment of former Owls midfielder Danny Wilson as Blades manager will add extra to spice to the red-hot fixtures. Wednesday ended a 95-year wait for a league double over their bitter neighbours in the 2008/09 campaign but United had the upper hand in 2009/10, winning 3-2 at Bramall Lane before holding the Owls to a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough.
Wednesday’s fans are renowned for travelling in numbers and next season should be no exception. Long trips to the likes of Southampton, Brighton, Swindon, Bristol and Plymouth have been lost due to promotion and relegation to be replaced by less arduous trips to the likes of Scunthorpe, Preston and Bury.
Chesterfield, managed by ex-Owls favourite John Sheridan, will also provide two keenly anticipated matches in what is set to be a very competitive League One season. The full fixture list is set to be released on Friday 17th June and key dates for the season will be available on Sheffield Wednesday’s footymad network website, www.owls-mad.co.uk
