No more playing around for Owls, it’s time for the real thing
Sheffield Wednesday’s pre-season schedule drew to a close this weekend and it is now time for the countdown to begin to the real thing as the 2011/12 Football league season kicks off this weekend.
Sheffield Wednesday face Rochdale at Hillsborough on Saturday as they bid to make a major improvement on last season’s disappointing 15th place finish in League One. Manager Gary Megson has overseen a number of personnel changes at the club over the summer months and it remains to be seen if these changes will have the desired effect.
Pre-season results have been a bit of a mixed bag. The 1st team brought their preparations to a close on Saturday with a creditable performance in a 0-0 draw with Premier League Stoke City at Hillsborough. There were also encouraging signs in a draw against Leeds united and a victory at Rotherham.
A defeat at Barnsley by an understrength Owls side highlighted the lack of strength in depth of the current squad whilst a humiliating hammering for the clubs’ youngsters at Alfreton Town will have done little for their confidence.
What seems apparent in terms of the first team is that the Owls should be much harder to break down than they were during the last campaign as additions to the back four and central midfield areas look to have made a promising early impression.
The ongoing concern is that Wednesday do not have enough in attack to take full advantage against their opposition. The squad is short on numbers in respect of wide midfielders and front line strikers and Megson has been looking to address this all summer long, so far to no avail.
The squad numbers were announced last week and perhaps tellingly, Wednesday left numbers 8, 9 and 10 open. Time is now against the Owls on this front , with just days to go to the season opener other clubs will know that Wednesday are desperate to add to their attacking options and will be pricing any players which the Owls have targeted accordingly.
