Owls off to a flyer as captain leads the way
Sheffield Wednesday got their season off to a solid start on Saturday as a 2-0 victory over Rochdale at Hillsborough gave them an impressive start.
Much had been made in the build up to the big kick-off regarding Wednesday’s lack of attacking options and manager Gary Megson admitted his frustration at not being able to secure his attacking targets before the opening game.
Despite lacking numbers in an attacking sense the Owls had been posing a threat from set-pieces during pre-season with plenty of height in the team and it was from a 1st half long throw that they made the breakthrough. New left-back Julian Bennett picked out captain Rob jones and the centre-back rose above the Rochdale defence to power a header into the back of the net.
The three points were made safe in the second half when Rochdale failed to fully clear their lines from an Owls corner and midfielder David Prutton struck with a peach of a volley from the edge of the penalty area. Aside from a spell early on in the 2nd half Wednesday looked more than capable of keeping their opponents at bay and they should be much harder to break down in general this season. Wednesday fans will be wary of the fact that last season faded away so badly after a promising start but there were certainly plenty of encouraging signs from the opening day.
Gary Megson has since bolstered his attacking options by signing Rochdale striker Chris O’Grady on a 3-year deal and if the Owls can add a couple more new faces before the transfer window closes the team should be capable of mounting an overdue promotion challenge.
