Paint cup not the priority as Owls bow out at Bradford
Sheffield Wednesday were humbled at League Two Bradford City on Tuesday evening as the home side triumphed 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out following a 0-0 draw.
Owls manager Gary Megson made it clear just how high on his list of priorities the particular competition lied by making three telling first-half substitutions. League Cup rules state that teams must start with 6 players that featured in the last 1st team match and so initially the Owls line-up to face the Bantams looked reasonably strong. However, within 20 minutes of the kick-off Nicky Weaver, David Prutton and Jose Semedo had all been substituted.
Despite risking having no further changes available for the remaining 70 minutes it was clear that it was more important to protect the 1st team regulars from any possible injury with next Monday’s important league clash at high-flying Charlton in mind.
Wednesday, with 16-year-old Ayo Obileye playing at the heart of the defence and young Cecil Nyoni performing impressively in midfield, gave a good account of themselves but failed to turn their superior possession into chances and Bradford created a number of 2nd half opportunities only to be denied by a confident and assured display by Richard O’Donnell in the Owls goal.
No member of staff, player or supporter enjoys losing any game but in truth there will be few tears shed by anyone involved with the club that Wednesday will not be progressing in the Football League Trophy, providing the promotion challenge can kick on.
Better news for the Owls on Tuesday evening came in the form of a new signing. Bury striker Ryan Lowe has moved to Hillsborough on a two-year deal and his impressive form both this season and in helping earn his club promotion last season should excite the Hillsborough faithful.
