Poyet’s abilities starting to set tongues wagging
Our first win at Elland Road since 1985 was notable in more ways than just for the excellence of the result. It represented yet another last-minute victory, not secured by Will Buckley for once. It was, in Poyet’s own words, the strongest side he’s ever had to pick from in his time as Brighton boss. And it further extended a run which has seen us not lose a game since the turn of the year.
But the talk before the game, and indeed afterwards, was of Poyet. Having assisted there earlier in his career, and with Leeds managerless, questions were asked as to whether he’d consider going there. His answer was to praise Leeds fulsomely, saying what a ‘beautiful place it is to work’, but also to point out that it’s a good time to be the Brighton manager at the moment. He has, to use his own words, ‘a lot of decisions to make’, presumably referring to the strength of the squad available to him now most players are fit. The time, he said, is not right.
Hardly a lifelong commitment to the club, but that’s not what we’d expect anyway. He will, eventually, move on to a bigger club. Leeds are a bigger club, and perhaps if they’d been in the top flight he’d have made the jump. He’s not, yet, likely to move directly to one of the big boys, not having yet managed in the Premier League, but the time will surely come when he does. We can only hope that we get a decent run as his ‘project’, and maybe even dip our toes in the land of milk and honey ourselves at some point.
