The slump continues….
A sixth defeat in seven games at St James’ Park means that Everton now hover perilously above the dreaded drop zone and forget the game in hand, it’s against rampant Spurs at White Hart Lane. So what do you do with a team that seems incapable of keeping a clean sheet, the hall mark of former Moyes’ teams? What do you do with a team that fails to convert the chances that they do create? Louis Saha could have scored a hat trick on Saturday with a cooler head and should have had a penalty when former Toffee Dan Gosling forearmed a goal-bound shot around the post for a corner! What do you do when there’s no sign of fresh blood on the horizon, despite rumours of interest from a giant Indian construction group last week? Maybe David Moyes downbeat forecast at the start of the season was spot on, expect mid table mediocrity?
The Blues have now lost 6 out of 10 games, scored just 11 goals and 6 of them were scored in games against Wigan and Fulham. Looking back over the last five seasons Everton have lost on average 3 games at home and 6 away from Goodison and that has led to a very commendable average final position of 6th and I know you can prove anything with statistics. However, the above would suggest we need to go unbeaten at Goodison for the rest of the season and only lose another 3 to try and emulate former successful finishes. There’s also probably not been a better ‘second half of the season team ‘during this five year period but looking at the current squad it looks a difficult task.
The eleventh hour departure of Arteta has left a creative gap and while this has allowed Jack Rodwell to flourish and earn a well deserved call up to the England squad, you can’t expect match winning performances every week. The attack continues to be the main concern. Drenthe remains an enigma, Seamus Coleman appears to be suffering from second season syndrome, Saha seems to be an increasingly frustrated figure and support from the evergreen Tim Cahill is not what is was as injuries take their toll. This would all point to more pressure on the distinctive head of Marouanne Fellani and if his head is turned by the bright lights of the Metropolis in January then just maybe this might be a watershed season for Everton Football Club. Wolves up next –a six pointer already??
