Three welcome points!
Most Evertonians celebrated last night after a much needed three points against a tough and resilient Wolves, displaying all the grit that their Manager showed in his playing career. We should also have been buoyed by the emergence of Jack Rodwell as a confident and competent England midfielder.
Rodwell even got the praise of the southern journalists who normally like to have a go at anyone who doesn’t play for the Gunners, Spurs or Chelski. So it was just a little disappointing when he didn’t turn out for the Toffees yesterday alongside his other England team mates, Jagielka and Baines. Rodwell’s England compatriots effectively won the game with Jagielka powering in Baines precise free kick before Leighton won the game with an oh so cool spot kick seven minutes from the end.
Of course those of us who are old enough were well accustomed to the sight of two, three or even four players in England teams. Ball ,Labone and Wilson in the Sixties and Seventies for the first two along with full backs Tommy Wright and Keith Newton. In the Eighties of course we had Lineker, Gary Stevens, Trevor Steven joined belatedly by Peter Reid and briefly by the vastly underrated Paul Bracewell. So despite Everton’s lowly position it was heart warming to see three Blue Lions and of course Jags excelled alongside another ex Blue, Joleon Lescott . At a time when the popularity of the national side is at a low it might just get a resurgence from the loyal faithful at Goodison Park.
Hopefully when a fit Rodwell returns to join the now committed Marouane Fellaini, the Blues can start their now customary climb back up the table and who knows, maybe England will reap the rewards as well.
