Doubts raised over Villas-Boas’ credentials for Spurs job

The race to become the next Tottenham manager is hotting up. Early favourite David Moyes of Everton has been usurped by French national manager Laurent Blanc and former Chelsea boss André Villas-Boas, who is now odds-on to replace Harry Redknapp. The Life’s A Pitch team consider Moyes to be the strongest candidate, but feel that Spurs want a younger head coach to fit a new managerial system at White Hart Lane.

“The early rumblings with players’ agents ringing up journalists is that the dressing room is not particularly enamoured with André Villas-Boas arriving at White Hart Lane,” says Ian Ridley. “Probably not [popular] with some of the fans as well, but he does fit the chairman’s [Daniel Levy's] profile of what they’re now looking for after Harry. He wants to get younger players at the right price, under the radar, like Graham Carr has done at Newcastle, like Arsenal do in some ways with Steve Rowley.”

Footballer-turned-journalist Adrian Clarke believes Tottenham players and fans are right to be concerned about Villas-Boas’ arrival. “The collateral damage from his time at Chelsea is that his reputation among players, his reputation in England, has been damaged. Does he know how to deal with players? Has he got a fixed way of playing? He made so many mistakes that I can fully understand why Tottenham’s players and fans would have reservations.”

Despite the bookmakers’ belief that Levy is set to appoint Villas-Boas, the Sunday Mirror’s David Walker reckons Blanc is the more likely choice. “Let’s be blunt on this, AVB’s track record is one outstanding season at Porto. You wouldn’t consider him for a job at the top of the Premier League on the back of the Chelsea thing – it’s outrageous. I don’t think David Moyes will get the Tottenham job, because he is an old-school manager who wants absolute control of all football issues and that’s not the way that Tottenham want to run the club. I think Laurent Blanc is a more likely candidate.”

Can anyone answer me why is Franc Rijkaard not been put forward as the new manager. Look what he did at barca.Blanc is a good manager but he is not as good as Rijaard. D.Levy go the right thing and get  Rijkaard.

  • Johannsveins

i would like Blanc .. he is a good manager he is number one for me.. also i thank the players would like him much more and would keep the key players more happy and also attrack some good players to come to us like Reny..

  • Iandyoung

Any one for Slaven Bilic? Young experienced in the premier and just come to the end of croatia contract! would take him as Spurs manager over all the names being mentioned

  • mocksy

look at rijkaard’s record at every club other than barcelona, as well as his disastrous final 2 years with the catalans with one of the best squads in world football. then work out why no-one wants him anywhere near their club.

Villas boas has won more trophies than what redknapp has in over 20 years yet nobody is doubting redknapps ability! Even though he has failed to get us in champs league with the best team we have had since the double winning side. David walker needs to give up writing articles he clearly don’t have s clue about villas boas, he was the tactical mastermind behind why Chelsea where so successful under mourinho.

I believe he’s accepted an offer in Russia which starts straight after the Euros are done…

Absolutely don’t want AVB anywhere near WHL..LIke the man said,he had one good season at a foregin club and was a total failure in the English PL.
So why would Levy even consider him? Probably because  he ( Levy) would be the complete puppet master,as he’s wanted to be all along, and Bojas the willing and grateful puppet.
I finf the whole thing unbelievable.
Laurent Blanc would be a good choice, and a sensible one  ,following Harry but as I said,I fear that Levy doesn’t give a damn about what the fans or players want, and wants to be the puppett master. All of this has “BAD DECISION..DON’T DO IT..YOU’LL BE SORRY” written all over it.

Tactical “Mastermind” behind why Chelsea were so successful under Mourinho??  Yeah his genius masternind  certainly was on show for the 6 months he was ruining Chelsea last season.Yes..I said RUINING..not RUNNING. What kind of weed are you smoking.?

Nice idea and I would be open to him ,BUT, there is no way on gods green earth that the likes of Daniel Levy would employ a guy like Bilic ,who is a bit of a loose canon and totally his own man.I’m convinced more than ever that Levy wants somebody there that he can control almost completely. I think you can forget about that union happening.

Blanc, of course,  More mature, more experienced, more respected.

Trophies were won at Porto. The difference between playing and managing in that league as opposed to the English PL are like night and day.He has shown me,and many others that whatever abilities he may have,he isn’t ready to manage in English Football at the highest level. Not by a long way.He should ber cutting his teeth in the English game ,if thats where he wants to be,in the lower divisons.

Its a shambles – not one of these people are in Harry’s league – for all you anti Harry’s ‘you finally got what you wanted’ now watch us head back to mid table – sorry but this is so fecking depressing…

  • Guest

I agree with every word you’ve said. The anti Harry brigade will be sorry.
I wonder why Liverpool interviewed and then decided against Boas. The guy has no place in top flight PL football.Full stop.

  • Will

If AVB really thinks that HE should be the ONLY one interviewed for the job then he is delusional. I don’t like Capello but his CV make’s AVB look like a boy scout

  • Keith_cannon

Oh dear the Journalists say Spurs wont be any good now.  What do they know.  Redknapp is a great manager but he wanted to leave so Levy said bye Harry.  AVB definitetly the way forward.  Seem to remember Redknapp saying I am not here to please the players they are here to please me!

Blanc would be the best choice out of the names being thrown about..by a long way,but NOTHING is every done  the best way at Spurs.Levy has appointed more failures than successes in his time as Chairman.Jol had moderate success, and then there was Harry. The rest of his appointees failed including Hoddle,so his track record in appointing managers doesn’t leave me feeling confident at all.He got it right with Harry ,but maybe that was just the law of averages landing on his side for once.
