“Everton have criminally underachieved this season”
Forget football being just a game of two halves – for Everton it perpetually seems to be a season of two halves. The trend goes that they play like utter dross until January, then suddenly become amazing. Recent wins against Man City and Chelsea suggest that they’re at it again. But can they win any silverware this season – namely the FA Cup? The Life’s A Pitch team pops on some safety goggles, sparks up a bunsen burner, then earnestly discusses David Moyes and his side.
“Everton are in good form,” begins Adrian Clarke, former footballer and journalist. “They’ve had a couple of decent wins in recent weeks, and they’ve got a very balanced-looking team, so as for winning the FA Cup – perhaps. That said, I think they’ve criminally underachieved this season. If you look at their squad, they should be where Newcastle are.”
Dominic Fifield of the Guardian seems equally perplexed by the Merseyside team’s inability to start the season well. “It’s happening for the third year running. January appears to have galvanised them, and the signings they’ve made have freshened things up, so maybe they will build up a bit of momentum now.”
One theory for the stuttering Everton performances is that they don’t have anyone to score goals. “Everton haven’t performed because they need a striker,” says Duncan White of the Sunday Telegraph, putting the whole business in a nutshell.
The panel then discusses Blackpool, Birmingham, and potential FA Cup upsets.
