“Lee Clark could find himself at Elland Road very shortly”
Nothing quite sticks in the craw like an unfair dismissal, so you can forgive ex-Huddersfield man Lee Clark for feeling a little bit ‘Carlos Tevez’ about his current predicament. Only three losses from 55 matches, and he was still handed his P45 and given the heave-ho. Has the world gone mad? The Life’s A Pitch team forages through the muck in search of answers, and to get to the bottom of rumours that Clark might end up at nearby Leeds.
“From the outside looking in, it seems insane to get rid of a young manager who has such a good record,” begins Dominic Fifield of the Guardian. “But Huddersfield fans have been quick to point out that things haven’t been that rosy for Lee Clark – he’s only managed 17 points from the last 36 available, and has made some odd selection decisions. It doesn’t seem to have come as that much of a surprise in Huddersfield itself.”
As the plot begins to thin, the word on the street also suggests that the air had soured between Clark and Huddersfield’s chairman Dean Hoyle. A fact not lost on Duncan White of the Sunday Telegraph. ”The relationship with the chairman had broken down, and the argument is that he’s been given good backing, and that when it counted Lee Clark didn’t deliver. But who is going to replace him? And will they really be any better?”
Former footballer and journalist Adrian Clarke has a theory, involving Simon Grayson heading to Huddersfield, with Clark going in the other direction to the vacant post at Leeds. “It’s got ‘job swap’ written all over it,” he says. “Leeds is open, and I think Ken Bates will go for a good, young, up-and-coming manager who won’t demand crazy wages. Lee Clark could find himself at Elland Road very shortly.”
