“No doubt that Everton are the top team on Merseyside”
Everton’s well-earned victory over Sunderland last Saturday saw them keep their place in the top four as their cracking start to the season continued. And the Life’s a Pitch team believe the blue half of Merseyside fully deserve their plaudits. So can David Moyes’ team can justifiably call itself the best team in Liverpool?
“They are at the moment,” says the People’s Tom Hopkinson of Everton’s obvious superiority over Liverpool this season. “There can be no questioning that – they’re playing some terrific football. They’re getting results – the 2-1 victory over Sunderland at the weekend, for example – that they perhaps wouldn’t have got in years gone by. All of this comes against the backdrop of a manager who is out of contract in the summer, which is hugely significant. There can be no doubting that Everton are the top team on Merseyside.”
Regarding Moyes, the Sunday Telegraph’s Jason Burt reckons the Scotsman’s unfounded reputation for being dour counts against him. “I know for a fact that Tottenham decided they didn’t want to look at him because of that. They actually thought he was a defensive manager, that it wouldn’t work, that kind of football. But he’s not a defensive manager, he’s a very positive manager.”
Crucial to the Toffees’ blistering start to the season has been the form of Marouane Fellaini and fellow Belgian Kevin Mirallas, says the Mail on Sunday’s Ian Ridley. “I saw them at Fulham a couple of weeks ago and they were a very potent combination. They know each other’s games. Fellaini was absolutely unplayable that day. He was a beast and he’s at the peak of his game at the moment.”
The team also chart the progress of Brendan Rodgers and his young starlets at Anfield.
