Crawley tipped to knock Stoke out of the FA Cup
It’s a good time to be a Crawley Town fan. Despite their defeat to Swindon this week, the League Two outfit are chasing back-to-back promotions, and welcome Premier League Stoke to the Broadfield Stadium for an FA Cup fifth-round tie this weekend. And such is their momentum, the Life’s A Pitch team fancy them to beat last season’s finalists, Stoke.
“I think Stoke would obviously love to have another run in the cup like they did last season,” says the People’s Janine Self. ”But they’ve also got Valencia in the Europa League [on Thursday]. They’ve slid down the Premier League table in recent weeks, so perhaps their eye might be slightly off the ball. Crawley at home could give them a real good game.”
But the Daily Telegraph’s Jason Burt expects Crawley to give Stoke more than a good game. ”I think they’ll win,” he says. “I think they’ll beat Stoke. Stoke look like they’re running on empty now. A lot of their game is built on power and pace, and on being fit. I saw them the other week and they looked very tired to me. It’s [been] a very long season for them already. They’ve got that Europa League tie [against Valencia] – that will take a lot out of them. I think they’ll go out to Crawley.”
Crawley’s success is often put down to their big spending, which the Daily Express’ Ian Ridley acknowledges, but he also feels manager Steve Evans deserves some credit. ”His achievements are quite considerable, aren’t they?” he says. “In non-league, he took Boston United up [to the Football League], [despite] the financial shenanigans around that. He took [Crawley] to Old Trafford last season in the FA Cup, and they’re back in the FA Cup fifth round again this weekend against Stoke City.”
