“Grayson is making the best of meagre resources”
After a slow start to this season’s Championship, some decent results have seen Leeds United climb the table. But the Life’s A Pitch panel believes the numerous players that left during the summer means manager Simon Grayson has a squad that will struggle to finish in the play-offs.
Ian Ridley of the Express has been impressed by Grayson’s ability to get as much as he has out of this Leeds team. ”Simon Grayson is actually doing very well to keep them where they are, which is on the fringes and interested in the play-offs,” he says. “Because they lost players like Max Gradel in the summer. I think he’s making the best of meagre resources and it doesn’t look likely that he’ll get any more [money to spend]. They look to me like they’ll do well to make the play-offs.”
One player to benefit from the departures at Leeds this summer is Adam Clayton after a loan spell away, says Tom Hopkinson of The People. ”He’s settled in very well this season,” says Tom. “They lost [Bradley] Johnson and [Neil] Kilkenny in the summer, and that’s where Clayton has come in and done very well. He’s been earning some rave reviews with his performances.”
Another team unlikely to be challenging for automatic promotion is Cardiff, says Adrian Clarke of the Red, White & Blue podcast. ”I get the feeling that they’re starting again,” he says. “They really went for it last year with [Craig] Bellamy there, and [Michael] Chopra and [Jay] Bothroyd. They’ve got in a manager in Malky Mackay who’s used to working on limited resources. He’s the perfect man to rebuild them. [But] I don’t think that this is their season. I don’t think they’ve got the striker power.”
