“Millwall didn’t half need that”
Millwall’s victory at Leicester not only ended a winless league run of 10 matches for Kenny Jackett’s men, it was also the defeat that saw the East Midlanders part company with manager Sven-Goran Eriksson. And the Life’s A Pitch panel, speaking before Eriksson’s departure, believes that Darius Henderson’s hat-trick couldn’t have come at a better time for Millwall.
Dominic Fifield of the Guardian thinks that Millwall will need plenty more matches like that from Henderson if they’re to stay out of relegation trouble. “They lost strikers in the summer with [Steve] Morison, and they let [Neil] Harris go, obviously,” he says. “They needed to rely on somebody. Henderson isn’t going to score bucketloads, but you know what you’re going to get with him, and he’s going to have his days like Saturday when he does do well and they can play off him.
“They didn’t half need that. They’ve had a pretty dismal time of it recently, and surprisingly so, because Kenny has done such a decent job there. He has done a wonderful job and you still look at them and think they’ve probably got enough to stay up. Maybe this will be the springboard to better times ahead.”
The Millwall manager is said to have the full support of chairman John Berylson, who has apparently said he’d get rid of 15 players before he let his manager go. “[That support is] fantastic if you’re the manager,” explains Janine Self of The People. ”History shows that clubs who keep changing their managers don’t succeed.
“There were green shoots of recovery on Saturday [for Millwall]. Henderson was a big plus, because he does score goals, cause trouble and frighten defenders.”
Adrian Clarke of the Red, White & Blue podcast, speaking before Eriksson’s departure, has been unconvinced of the former Leicester manager’s performance since taking over. ”He chose the safe signings, the players that he knew,” he says. “I also think it wasn’t too clever stripping Andy King of the captaincy. He was their best player last season by a country mile. He’s a quality player, well respected within the club.”
