Nigel Pearson tipped to take Leicester up

Just 18 months after resigning as Leicester City manager to take over at Hull City, Nigel Pearson is poised to make a controversial return to his old club. And the Life’s A Pitch panel believes Pearson is the man to take Leicester to the Premier League.

“I think Nigel is a good manager, I think he’s got solid back-room staff,” says David Walker of the Sunday Mirror, who considers the soon-to-be Leicester boss capable of handling the pressure of promotion. But he points out that the Championship is more competitive than ever. “[Teams] drop from third and fourth and looking like they are in the play-offs, then suddenly they are at eighth and ninth and the panic sets in,” he says.

Pearson’s imminent move from Hull to Leicester is another example of ruthlessness in a division dominated by the massive financial incentive to win promotion, says Janine Self of The People. ”The prize of going from the Championship is so huge that it’s become a cut-throat industry,” she says.

Hull, meanwhile, look set to replace Pearson with either MK Dons manager Karl Robinson or Manchester United’s reserve team coach Warren Joyce. “It will be interesting to see which way they go,” says The People’s Tom Hopkinson, who believes Joyce’s experience at United makes him the strongest candidate. “He’s learning from the best, isn’t he, with the man above him Sir Alex Ferguson,” he says.

And at the other end of the financial spectrum, the panel discusses if the appointment of new Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton could be a money-saving blueprint for future managerial appointments.
