“Powell has really turned it around” at Charlton
With Charlton Athletic sitting four points clear at the top of League One, Chris Powell has ended his first year in management on a real high. Although Powell initially oversaw some mixed results last season, having overhauled his squad during the summer, the Addicks have bagged 17 wins from 25 league game this season and are blazing a promotion trail. The Life’s A Pitch panellists believe Powell can be well proud of his first year in charge, and they tip Charlton to clinch a spot in the Championship.
“He’s doing a great job, he’s really turned it around,” says Tom Hopkinson of The People. “I know the board came very close to moving him on towards the end of last season, but decided to stick with him, and he really has proved that it was a good decision,” Tom explains. “We’re getting to the business end of the season now so they just need to maintain and kick on.”
The Telegraph’s Jason Burt is another big fan of Powell, and he expects Charlton to stay on course for promotion with him at the helm. “I can’t see Charlton running out of steam,” says Jason. “I think they will score enough goals to stay up there and get promoted.”
Next up for the Addicks is a crucial top-of-the-table clash versus second-place Sheffield United on Saturday, where they’ll come up against £18,000-a-week striker Ched Evans. And the Guardian’s Dominic Fifield thinks failure to win promotion this season could have disastrous financial implications for the Blades. “I’m not even sure whether [a salary of] £18,000 would be sustainable in the Championship,” warns Dominic. ”They’ve got a legacy from their ambitious days in the Championship, so they have to get out of League One quickly.”
Also up for discussion is Martin Keown’s potential installment as Stevenage manager, and the huge struggle Aidy Boothroyd has on his hands at Northampton, bottom of the Football League.
