“I wonder how far O’Neill can take Sunderland”
At the start of December Sunderland had just lost at home to lowly Wigan at the Stadium of Light and things looked very, very bleak for Steve Bruce and the Black Cats. Fast forward through Christmas and into February and Martin O’Neill, Bruce’s replacement, has won seven out of 10 games and Sunderland sit just six points behind Liverpool. What is it that makes O’Neill such an effective manager? Is it luck, his backroom staff or is he just doing what Steve Bruce should have done?
Ian Ridley of the Daily Express thinks the former Aston Villa manager is benefiting from just doing the basic things well, with a spot of luck. “Look at what he’s done there, this effect he’s had on Sunderland – 10 games and 22 points, goodness me. What looked a mediocre squad six weeks ago all of a sudden looks very potent, and might get up to Liverpool in that seventh place. What Martin O’Neill is good at is the simple things, and that is putting square pegs in square holes. He’s also a very lucky manager – that game against Manchester City for example, they were absolutely battered. He’s got it all going for him.”
However, the panel aren’t all O’Neill converts. John Cross of the Daily Mirror wonders how far the ex-Celtic boss can take Sunderland. “I wish him all the best, and he’s doing a great job now, but I think that he immediately came in a little bit overhyped for his ability. He’ll do a good job, but I just wonder in the longer term, how far he can take [Sunderland]. He’s doing what he says on the tin so far, but can he take Sunderland to the next step – a push to the Europa League?”
The panel also discusses Steve Kean’s future at Blackburn and praise the job Mick McCarthy has done at Wolves.
