“Liverpool have wriggled on the hook all the way through”
Having only reluctantly accepted Luis Suarez’s eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra and continually insisting the Uruguayan is innocent, Liverpool have done an “enormous amount of damage” to their club, according to the Life’s A Pitch panel. Plus, it will take a considerable effort by the club to recover its reputation, says the panel.
The Daily Express’ Ian Ridley believes Liverpool’s continued opposition to the independent panel’s findings, and only a qualified apology from Suarez, has caused ”an enormous amount of damage”. And he feels “they’ve wriggled on the hook all the way through” this issue. “They’ve done a disservice to their many fans worldwide who would be looking for a rather more dignified response from such a great football club. Liverpool have got a lot of work to do to recover from this.”
Kenny Dalglish has been pivotal in the club’s defiance to the verdict and the Sunday Telegraph’s Duncan White feels the Liverpool manager probably now wishes he’d kept his own counsel more. ”Dalglish has said some things I’m sure he now regrets, but at the same time he’s very passionate and wants to defend his team,” Duncan explains. “Sometimes those decisions have to be taken out of his hands by someone higher up in the club.”
The Daily Mirror’s Martin Lipton feels Liverpool’s handling of their defence was totally flawed. ”There are some valid points that Liverpool can make on this case,” he explains. “It’s a shame they didn’t make them at the start, or in the middle, but right at the end when it was too late.”
The panel goes on to discuss how the impact of such negativity towards the club and Suarez’s ban will affect results on the pitch.
