Spurs will go for Mourinho if Harry takes England job
When Fabio Capello resigned as England manager, it wasn’t fans of the national team that were sad to see the Italian go – it was Tottenham fans. It looks increasingly likely that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp will take over from Capello, if tweets from England players and opinion pieces in the press are anything to go by. But, assuming this happens, who will Spurs find to replace their popular manager?
“The Spurs board like [Everton boss David] Moyes, they like the cut of his gib, they like the way he inspires an almost tribal loyalty among his players at Everton,” claims Martin Lipton of the Daily Mirror. ”Saying that, they will go and have a dart for [José] Mourinho. Remember that Spurs offered Mourinho a job before Chelsea did, way back seven or eight years ago. It’s a question of whether he wants to [work within Spurs’ financial restrictions]. What he’d be going into is a team that is top-quality already, and perhaps you might argue that his ability to win titles is what’s not there at the moment. My suspicion is still Moyes, but Spurs will definitely try and see what Mourinho’s thoughts are. They’d be mad not to.”
“It’s not going to be an easy task for Spurs,” says former footballer and journalist Adrian Clarke. “I think much depends on where they finish this season; if they maintain their challenge and end up in the top three, it’s a job that any manager in the world would covet – the likes of [Rafael] Benítez and maybe José Mourinho. However, I suspect it might go to someone like David Moyes, or Alan Pardew perhaps, although I don’t see him leaving Newcastle in a hurry. Chris Hughton is a Tottenham man and he’s performing miracles at Birmingham. He would be a left-field but popular choice among the fans. If you were to ask me now, I’d say David Moyes would have his name on it.”
Redknapp is, of course, yet to throw his hat into the ring for the England job, but David Walker of the Sunday Mirror thinks it’s only a matter of time. “I think that Harry is of an age where he still feels this great pull towards England and, if he was given the chance to be England manger, I think he’d take it. The situations we have to look at now are: how quickly he steps into the England job, whether Tottenham can accept that he works part-time, and the agreement for the long term and buying out his contract. Brutally realistically, I’d be astonished if Harry was there next season as Tottenham manager.”
