There could be a “rebellion if Arsenal go out of the FA Cup”

These are delicate times for Professor Wenger. Last weekend’s defeat against Man Utd has done little to inspire the Arsenal faithful, and certainly wasn’t helped by a dubious substitution, which even found Robin van Persie shrieking to the heavens in frustration. Now Aston Villa are readying themselves for a trip to north London to slug it out to stay in the FA Cup. Defeat, says the Life’s A Pitch panel, could be very costly.

“This fixture is important for various reasons,” starts Duncan White of the Sunday Telegraph. “Arsenal have lost some of the momentum they had before Christmas, so they need to change the tone more than anything else. They need to build up their confidence.”

Wenger, in particular, has come under fire following a fairly dire showing against Man Utd – not least for replacing his great young hope Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with the day before yesterday’s man, Andrey Arshavin. With such a lack of strength in depth, can Arsenal now realistically target the top four?

“They’re getting adrift of Chelsea,” says Dave Kidd of The People. “I can see Chelsea finishing in the top four, but I can’t see Arsenal finishing in the top four.”

Hence, much of the weight of expectation will land on the FA Cup – perhaps the team’s only realistic hope of silverware. Their entire season depends on a weekend victory against Aston Villa, suggests Jason Burt of the Telegraph.

“The frustration is always very close to the surface and it doesn’t take much for it to boil over. If they go out of the FA Cup, it could continue into a rebellion.”

The panel goes on to discuss the rest of the upcoming FA Cup ties, including Tottenham’s intriguing Friday night out in Watford.
