So, it goes that Brad Friedel played a blinder, the man they call ‘AVB’ rightly suggested that new boy Hugo Lloris might have a fight on his hands to make the Spurs first team, and now water carrier extraordinaire Didier Deschamps has thrown his five Francs into the mix and a mountain has been made out of a mole hill. Thankfully the Life’s a Pitch panel – notably John Cross of the Daily Mirror – is on hand to get to the bottom of things.

“It’s been put out there as a story and I’ll tell you who put it out there – Didier Deschamps,” begins Cross, referring to the France boss’ suggestion that his keeper is unhappy with Tottenham boss André Villas-Boas already. “His comments have been unhelpful to his goalkeeper and he’s been a little bit disrespectful to Spurs.”

“AVB had to say nice things about Friedel, and not much was made of it at the time, because Friedel had pulled off some fantastic saves – what else could he say? Then Deschamps oversteps the mark and puts Villas-Boas in a difficult situation. His man-management will now be tested.”
