Henry has “just been papering over the cracks” at Arsenal
Thierry Henry’s brief return to Arsenal has had most Gunners swooning. And despite being slightly off the pace, the Frenchman has proven he still has the knack of scoring important goals. But as the Life’s A Pitch team discusses, who will take over the scoring mantle for Arsène Wenger’s team when Henry heads back to Major League Soccer?
“He’s scored two winning goals in the three [games he has scored in] that he’s played,” explains the Daily Telegraph’s Jason Burt. “But the problem I have is that it’s just papering over the cracks. [Henry's loan spell] has worked better than I thought it would, but I don’t think it’s worked that well. When he goes now, it’ll just expose that Arsenal squad even more.”
A point that Ian Ridley of the Daily Express agrees with. “When Thierry Henry can come into that side, make a cameo appearance and score three goals, then something is not quite right.”
Putting to one side how his return to the New York Red Bulls leaves Arsenal, Janine Self of The People believes the loan spell has been a big success. “I have to hold my hands up here,” she says. “I thought it was a really bad idea for him to come back, because he was so revered, and with the statue [honouring his achievements at Arsenal] and everything. I thought, he’ll come back and look past it. [But] he scores a goal against Leeds, scores again on Saturday, maybe play against Milan, maybe score a goal again. He’s actually just enhanced his reputation.”
