“I’d take Craig Bellamy over Joe Cole”

Last August Joe Cole packed up his troubles in his old kit bag and set off for his very own French exchange at Lille. A year later and he is back at Anfield with nothing but a pocket full of bangers to show for his adventure on the continent. After Brendan Rodgers handed the little magician a start in the first leg of Liverpool’s Europa League third qualifying-round tie against Gomel, it looks like he may be back in first-team contention, but are there players more deserving of the famous red shirt, like Cardiff-bound Craig Bellamy? The Daily Telegraph’s Jason Burt certainly thinks so.

“I’m not sure anyone else would take him [Cole] at the moment,” says Jason. “Especially with the wages he’s on. Clearly, Brendan Rodgers has given him the opportunity to come in and play, he’s got to look at all the options. He’s shipped out enough players as it is and I’m worried about some of the departures.”

The biggest worry for Jason being Welsh forward Bellamy, who looks set to join Cardiff. The 33-year-old cites personal reasons for wanting to return to his hometown club, and he could go on a free transfer.

“I think it’s a big mistake letting Bellamy go. We’ve seen with Team GB at the Olympics – he’s been their best player – he’s still got something to offer. When he played for Liverpool last season he was very successful. Personally, I would take Bellamy over Joe Cole, but with the wages Joe Cole is on, it’s difficult to get him out and they’ve got other priorities at the moment so there is an opportunity for him to come in and play.”

I’d take anyone over Joe Cole. Over-hyped, over-paid, unintelligent and unfit.

Now that Cole is injured its looks like he wont be going anywhere. West Ham showed some interest at the beginning of the window, but Rodgers was adamant that Cole deserved the chance to prove his worth as he had fond memories of him from their time at Chelsea. He should have bitten Big Sam’s hand off as none of the players BR has let go are on his wages.
