January Arsenal move for Kalou would require Arshavin sale

With Salomon Kalou’s contract up at Chelsea this summer, speculation is growing that Arsenal are poised to make a move for him this month. The Daily Mirror’s John Cross refuses to rule a January transfer bid out for Kalou, but expects the Gunners would only be keen to pursue this winter if they received a decent offer for the under-performing Andrey Arshavin.

“He is out of contract at the end of the season and Wenger is a long-term admirer, so his name has cropped up,” says John of Arsenal’s interest in the Chelsea forward. “[But] any player in that position, I think their priority will always be to become a free agent and see it out. So, I would be surprised if it happened in January, because his earning potential is so much more as a free agent,” he adds.

“But he [Kalou] has got potential, simply because I think Arsenal might do a little bit of business. If they could bring someone in, and get a good deal on Arshavin, then I think that’s one that’s got potential for happening.”
