Liverpool focus on improving academy, not buying new strikers
Despite Liverpool’s terrrific cup success this past week, the league has so far proven to be more of a challenge. The Reds’ spluttering forward line has been widely blamed for the measly 25 Premier League goals they’ve scored this season, yet it looks like the January transfer window will slam firmly shut without Kenny Dalglish bringing in any striking reinforcements. Instead, the Liverpool boss and his back-room staff have been concentrating on improving the current players and recruiting stars of the future, says Duncan White of the Sunday Telegraph.
Yes, they have international strikers Luis Suárez, Andy Carroll, Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy on the books – as well as goalscoring midfielders Steven Gerrard, Maxi Rodríguez and Charlie Adam – but Dalglish’s side have still scored the sixth fewest goals in the Premier League. “They have got enough strikers,” says Duncan. “It’s the fact that they aren’t performing which could be more of an issue with the coaching. You know what the American owners are like; they’re very methodical, so unless someone goes out I doubt there’ll be someone coming in.
“The problem with Liverpool is, and I know they’ve been getting a bit grumpy about this, they’ve been linked with every man and his dog in this transfer window when, in fact, they spent the first part of it concentrating on the Suárez case. They might pick up something if they can get real value for it, but most of the recruitment has been happening in the academy. They’ve been bringing a lot of young kids in and they’re trying to raise the standards there.”
