Man Utd urged to sell Berbatov now
With both Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich reportedly keen to sign Dimitar Berbatov, talk is growing that the Bulgarian is set to end his stay at Manchester United in search of first-team football. And while the Premier League champions do have the option to extend Berbatov’s contract, as his deal ends this summer, the Daily Telegraph’s Jason Burt thinks Sir Alex Ferguson should cash in now.
“The rumours have started up again, haven’t they, about Leverkusen?” Jason says of the Man Utd frontman. “I think they did express some interest in him a while ago that prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to talk about taking up the option of an extra year on his contract. [But] that could have been a measure to protect his transfer value as much as anything else.
“He had that little burst of goals [over Christmas], didn’t he? But you do look at him and think that he just doesn’t fit into that Manchester United team anymore. He’s obviously been overtaken by [Danny] Welbeck and [Javier] Hernandez, who isn’t having the greatest of seasons. But clearly Welbeck is way ahead of Berbatov now in terms of the pecking order.
“I think United would be foolish not to think about trying to capitalise and get some money for him now, if they can do. But the only problem is that Michael Owen is injured at the moment, so if they did sell him they would be a little bit light up front because some of the other players have had bad injury records.”
