60 second pundit
“Maybe it’s a sign that Man Utd do need to re-invest”
Manchester United fans everywhere are probably still trying to piece together exactly how their team was humiliated 6-1 by Manchester City at Old Trafford yesterday. Dominic Fifield of the Guardian believes the manner of the result does suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson’s team needs strengthening and that perhaps the younger players still have plenty of room for improvement.
Despite spending more than £50million on the likes of David de Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones in the summer, it has been claimed that Man Utd are still short of quality in the centre of midfield. An argument that looked stronger yesterday as Man City created chances at will in a second-half onslaught (following Jonny Evans’ sending off) that was watched by the Man Utd owners, the Glazer family.
“It’s not opportune for them [the Glazers] to witness a humiliation like that, but maybe it’s a sign that they do need to re-invest again,” he says. “Fergie will have to look at it.”
And while Dominic admits the result does question the quality of Man Utd’s younger players, he’s certain that they will keep getting better. ”Maybe these young players aren’t quite as good as we were making out in the first few weeks of the season. I’m sure that won’t have come as a big surprise to Sir Alex Ferguson. Maybe it does to observers from the outside. But there’s a while to go before this team is properly developed.”
