‘Newcastle should sign £9million Crouch’
Newcastle are the latest club to be linked with Peter Crouch this summer with the Tottenham striker seemingly surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane. And although Newcastle are said to have been frightened off by Tottenham’s £9million valuation of the England international, Ian Ridley of the Daily Express strongly believes the Magpies should sign Crouch, even at that price.
Ian feels that Crouch, now 30, is worth what Spurs want for him and that his proven record in the Premier League means he would be very likely to succeed at St James’ Park.
Saying that Crouch is “one of the most underrated strikers simply because of the way he looks”, Ian is convinced the Newcastle target is a proven performer. “Whoever he has played for, wherever he has gone, he has scored goals and led the line,” says Ian.
Toon boss Alan Pardew has been notably restrained in the summer transfer window so far, despite the club still having the best part of Andy Carroll’s £35million transfer still to be spent. Ian thinks that spending £9million on Crouch would be an extremely good way to invest some of this money.
“For Newcastle he’d be a very good signing, even at that price. Because although he’s 30, he hasn’t played a great deal over the last couple of years – so [£9million] may be good value. After all, they’ve got £35million that was going to be given to the manager to spend.”
