The Big Question
Blackburn, Wigan and Swansea tipped for the drop
With the Premier League season about to kick off, the Life’s A Pitch panel has been predicting which clubs it thinks will get relegated. And unfortunately for fans of Blackburn and Wigan, along with newly promoted Swansea, they are the three teams with the most votes.
The view from certain panel members is that Blackburn and Wigan won’t be able to repeat their narrow escape this season, while Swansea’s open game will be a point of weakness.
While Martin Lipton of the Daily Mirror actually believes that QPR and Norwich are more likely to go down than Wigan and Swansea, he is convinced that Blackburn will say goodbye to top-flight football. “I don’t see how [Blackburn] can possibly stay up, I really don’t,” he explains.
“I think they are the weakest team, the weakest squad, [they have] the weakest leadership, and the weakest club. [It] doesn’t mean they’ll finish bottom, but they’re the weakest club in that division.”
Dominic Fifield of the Guardian really admires Swansea’s footballing philosophy but believes “it’s going to be really, really tough for them”.
“They won’t be able to out-football teams in the Premier League like they did in the Championship,” he says. “You do worry that if they are to be found wanting it will be on that front – that they won’t be able to adapt their game for certain situations. I hope they do well, but I think it’ll be tricky for them.”
Dominic’s other relegation picks were Blackburn and Wigan.
John Cross of the Daily Mirror also believes that Swansea, Blackburn and Wigan will be relegated. Of Wigan he says: “Wigan, in my eyes, have become the Coventry of the 80s and early 90s, that perennial team battling against the drop.
“Each year they defy gravity. I do think this year it’s going to have a stronger pull. You can’t keep on losing players, selling to balance the books, and bringing in new unproven players, like they’ve been doing and getting away with.”
