The Big Question
Bolton boss “needs to clear his head and work out what he wants”
For romantics, Bolton Wanderers are lying in the gutter looking at the stars. For everyone else, they’re simply bottom of the league. Owen Coyle has endured a tough start to the season, but can he survive the slump? The Life’s A Pitch panel take a magnifying glass to the mess.
“He’s unsackable at the moment,” insists David Walker of the Sunday Mirror. “But Bolton aren’t a yo-yo team any more – they’ve been in the Premier League for eleven seasons, so losing that status would be a savage blow. If he doesn’t get a couple of results, the board will have to look at making a change, but the good news for Owen is that the fans still believe in him.”
Tom Hopkinson of The People is inclined to agree: “You don’t become a bad manager overnight,” he says. “He’s been really unlucky with injuries, and the board will be aware of the restrictions he’s had to work with.”
In fact, it seems that Coyle’s popularity with football journalists knows no bounds. Adrian Clarke of the Red White & Blue podcast is similarly sympathetic to Bolton’s plight.
“I think Owen Coyle has got himself into a bit of a pickle,” insists Adrian. “He’s had a really tough start, fixtures-wise – only the Norwich game was a surprise defeat – but as a result of these constant heavy defeats, he’s chopping and changing his side every week.
“He just needs to clear his head and work out what he wants from this Bolton side.”
