The Big Question
“Carlos Tevez has outraged the world of football”
It’s been a tough week for the robed billionaires in the Man City boardroom – first watching their team failing to soar in Germany against Bayern Munich, then the whole thing made all the more grotty when Carlos Tevez refused to budge when Mancini called him from the bench. It’s the most controversial “player versus club” story for quite some time, and one which unites the Life’s A Pitch panel when it comes to what should be done next.
“I think they should give him the punishment that hurts the most,” rages John Cross of the Daily Mirror. “I’m not sure sacking him would be that damaging to Carlos Tevez’s career, because it would allow him to move on as a free agent, pick up a huge signing-on fee elsewhere, and a huge contract. Carlos Tevez has outraged the world of football, and Manchester City have so much money that they could make him sit and rot for an awfully long time.”
“It will really hurt every Manchester City fan to think that every month Carlos Tevez earns a million quid,” counters Janine Self of The People. “It’s a lottery win every 12 months, and there’s nothing the club can do to stop paying him. It’s an absolute disgrace.”
One option, of course, would be to issue an apology and get back to playing. Not going to happen, suggests Janine, who feels that Mancini will have full backing on this one: “If Mancini decides that Tevez isn’t going to play for him again, then he mustn’t – the owners will back Mancini.”
Former player Adrian Clarke of the Red White & Blue podcast explains his bizarre outburst: “He was sulking, he’s thrown his toys out of his pram,” he says. “He’s frustrated. Sergio Aguero has come into the side, and he’s on the bench watching him perform just as well, if not better, than he did in a Man City shirt. He can’t handle it.”
