“It was a big goal for Carroll, but he wasn’t a good signing”

It was a great result for Liverpool in the weekend’s match against Everton, and also a first Merseyside derby visit for Life’s a Pitch panelist Tom Hopkinson of The People. “It was my first time, and it was a proper football occasion,” he concludes. Tom wasn’t the only one coming away from Goodison Park with a smile on his face – Liverpool’s expensive front man Andy Carroll made it onto the score sheet against his team’s local rivals. But what does the Life’s a Pitch panel make of the big man up top?

“It was good for Carroll to get the goal,” says Duncan White of the Sunday Telegraph, “Even though he’d not played particularly well until he scored.”

Dave Kidd of The People is rather more damning. “He’s the most expensive British footballer in history, therefore he’s going to have a spotlight on him and he hasn’t scored many goals,” he insists. “He is what he is, he’s a massive physical presence – an old-fashioned target man in a team that doesn’t really suit him. I don’t think he was a very good signing for Liverpool.”

Dave is, however, more positive about the imminent return of Steven Gerrard: “He’s the beating heart of that side. Liverpool’s sole aim is to get back into the Champions League, and if Gerrard can stay fully fit they’ve got a very good chance of making it.”

I hope that I am wrong but to date Andy Carroll is not even worth half of what Liverpool paid for him. He is not a footballer but a Ron Yeats type, who plays up front. He is extremely cumbersome and ponderous. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Carroll just has not got the necessary football skills.If he has not got the skill now he never will have.To liken him to Shearer is a joke. When Carroll is not playing and Bellamy is on the pitch there is so much more creativity and an air of anticipation. Bellamy should start every match for Liverpool I am fed up listening to KK trying to justify Carrols inclusion in the team. KK is also not winning any media friends with his confrontational attitude to nearly every post match interview he has conducted this season. I have been a Liverpool supporter for over 50 years.

Bellamy in for Carroll please, simples. Carroll to come in as a substitute to add something different for defenders to deal with.

KK can say what he likes to the media, Liverpool football club is his business not theirs and if he feels he needs to be confrontational with them because their constant knocking of his players could affect their performances then that is exactly what he should do. If he had the time he should have a few words with ‘supporters’ like you as well; 50 years – you’re not a fan now and probably never have been.

I am surprised that there was lots of talk about the game but no real talk about the fans bad behavior! Maybe a whole separate article is needed.

Brilliant!!!! This is what i call a true liverpool fan. Patient and knowledgable, the media crticises to fill space in thier blessed freedom of speech tool. Been mmisused and misguided. Carrol is a work in progress, and is an added dimension to the game. Wait till Bellamy or Downing get in on thier act, Carrol will only reap benefits.
