“Spurs bought three experienced players – as Wenger should have”

In his fifteen years at Arsenal, Wenger has known little but dominance over his neighbours at Tottenham, but it seems that the pendulum has finally swung the other way. Spurs were favourites before the weekend’s north London derby, and the bookies were right – they won. The Life’s a Pitch panel discusses the reasons behind this shift of power.

“Spurs didn’t have a particularly busy summer,” says Dave Kidd of The People. “But Harry Redknapp bought three experienced players, which is exactly what Wenger should have been doing.”

He is, of course, referring to Brad Friedel, Scott Parker and Emmanuel Adebayor – a trio with enough of a track record to bolster the spine of any team.

“There is a top-four position up for grabs that’s crucial for the financial future of the clubs,” continues Dave, “and I don’t see Arsenal getting that this season.”

Much of Tottenham’s recent success can be put down to the fine work of the manager Harry Redknapp, but Tom Hopkinson of The People also suggests that a doff of the cap should be saved for someone rather closer to the Spurs boardroom: “You have to give Daniel Levy some credit for keeping hold of Modric.”

“In Van der Vaart and Modric, Spurs have got two first-rate, inspirational players,” adds Duncan White of The Sunday Telegraph.

The team also discusses Ledley King – the man who could have been the greatest centre back on the planet.

No empire lasts forever. Gunners will rise again. I pray that the experienced purchases of Harry will give spurs 14 years of successive Champions League appearances. congratulations Spurs for the well deserved victory over your more illustrious London Neighbors.
