“The Toon are the success story of the season so far”

After the rollercoaster ride of the past few years, a decent start to the season by Newcastle United finds them sitting in fourth place in the Premier League. Not bad going for a side still yet to truly replace their prize marksman, Andy Carroll. The Life’s a Pitch team discusses the secrets behind their success, with host Mike Calvin declaring them “the success story of the season”.

“They’ve had a comfortable start,” says Ian Ridley of the Daily Express. “Clubs are queuing up to get Blackburn at home at the moment – so it’s a good start, but there’s still a long way to go.”

The summer found the Newcastle revolving door going at full pelt, with bigger personalities flying through the exit, and cannily bought new faces coming in – thanks mainly to some impressive work by the comedian Alan Carr’s dad, Graham, the club’s head scout.

“They’ve got a nice midfield, and I think Cabaye was one of the signings of the summer,” agrees Duncan White of the Sunday Telegraph. “They still need a real frontline striker to replace Carroll in the long term, but they’ll have to address that in January. Otherwise, it’s been very promising.”

Next up, a trip to Wolves, with the wind in the sails. Will the Toon faithful be demanding a result? Not necessarily, suggests Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph: “Expectations have been lowered somewhat, which I think has helped.”
