Gomis to Fulham and Owen to retire?

The transfer window is about to slam shut but there’s still time for some last-ditch deals to be secured. Here, the Life’s a Pitch panel discusses Fulham’s potential move for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis and whether or not Michael Owen will ever kick a ball in anger again, rating each rumour out of 10.

Lyon forward Gomis is being tipped as the next Didier Drogba, but is he genuinely on Fulham’s radar? The Sunday Telegraph’s Jason Burt doesn’t rule it out. “They scored a lot of goals on the opening day of the season but I think Martin Jol realises he needs to reinforce his team a bit,” says Jason. “It could be a hard season for them otherwise. Gomis is the sort of powerful striker that could appeal to them, so I’ll rate this as a six or seven.”

And what will become of the lesser-spotted Owen? Will the out-of-contract footballer find himself a new home in the next few days – or weeks – or is retirement a more likely scenario? The Mail on Sunday’s Ian Ridley urges the former England star to give it one more crack. “He’s gone into semi-retirement these past few years and it’s a waste of his career. He’s more interested in racehorses these days and he’s winding down, but for goodness sake Michael: show us what a great player, what a great finisher, you were and leave us with a memory, rather than being someone who was picking up money for two years for doing nothing. It’s an eight out of 10 shot that he’ll play again.”
