Two Minute Warning
“Capello should be made to see this through” by the FA
England head coach Fabio Capello’s criticism of the decision by the FA to strip John Terry of the England captaincy last week is a problem the FA could no doubt have done without. Here, the Life’s A Pitch team discuss whether Capello should remain in his job, and if he does vacate the role who should take his place?
“I think he’s been disrespectful,” argues the Daily Mirror’s John Cross. “He’s completely undermined the decision that [FA chairman] David Bernstein took last week. Whoever gets the captain’s armband now knows that Capello doesn’t really want him. It’s an impossible situation. I think Capello should quit now. He’s made a really bad ricket on this one.”
And while the Daily Express’ Ian Ridley is equally unimpressed by Capello’s actions, he reckons the FA should force the Italian to complete his contract. “I think he wants to go and he has got a job lined up,” Ian explains. “He should be made to see this through, quite frankly, and finish what he started here. And dig us out of the mess that he’s created.”
But if Capello were to leave the role, The People’s Tom Hopkinson believes one man in particular would make an excellent interim head coach for Euro 2012. “The man I’d love to see take over just for the rest of this season and the Euro campaign is Arsène Wenger,” says Tom. “He’s made it very clear he doesn’t want the job on a full- time basis. [Whereas] long term, Harry Redknapp has to be the man for me. But a little curveball, if Harry decides to stay at Spurs, I’d like to see David Moyes get a chance.”
