Cole to Man Utd, Reds close on Dempsey, Carroll Toon return?

The rumour mill is in overdrive and here the Life’s a Pitch panel gets to grips with three slices of juicy transfer gossip. First up, could Ashley Cole really quit Chelsea for Manchester United? Then there’s the unhappy case of Fulham’s Clint Dempsey. He wants Champions League football, but can Liverpool make his dreams come true? And finally, pony-tailed enigma Andy Carroll could be in line for a return to his spiritual, and actual, home – Newcastle.

The People’s Dave Kidd reckons there is some truth to the Ashley Cole (pictured) to Manchester United whisperings, but does not think he will be making his way up north just yet. “Manchester United have made an enquiry about him and they’re certainly looking for a left-back,” says Dave. “Cole has a year left on his Chelsea deal and he may well run that down. There seems to be a real sense at Chelsea that [Ryan] Bertrand could be the future at left-back and Cole, at 32 next summer, could be up for grabs. It’s not going to happen this year but there is a seven out of 10 chance, maybe a six out of 10 chance, that it could happen next summer.”

Clint Dempsey wants out of Fulham and journalist and author Ian Ridley reckons there’s an increasingly good chance the American midfielder will make Anfield his new home. “He’s pulled out of Fulham’s tour to Switzerland and apparently had a bit of a row with Martin Jol, so I would think a move is very much on the cards,” says Ridley. “Liverpool offer a way out for him. I think if he can’t find a Champions League club in Europe he may well end up there. An eight for that one.”

Andy Carroll has ignored the tales that the streets of east London are paved with gold and the Guardian’s Dominic Fifield thinks there is a fair chance he could return to Newcastle. “He doesn’t want to go [to West Ham],” says Fifield, “He wants European football next season and I think if he’s going to leave Liverpool, he’s set his heart on Newcastle. I can see him leaving if it’s made very clear to him he’s not going to get many games for Liverpool. And if Newcastle really want him they’re going to have to come up with a fee with a view to a permanent [transfer]. I can see that possibly happening but I wouldn’t give it more than a six out of 10.”

After the fiasco with Aquilani I can only believe that Liverpool will even pay a few million to NUFC as well as give them Carroll. That is the sort of thing LFC only understand – and they call themselves “businessmen”? Laughing stock all round !

I’m sorry the Peoples Dave Kidd , Manchester United will not sign an ageing soon to be 32 , in  December of this year  Ashley Cole to replace  Patrice Evra  who  has also turned 31 recently .It’s a nice thought as he is clearly the best  left back in the Premiership , but too old for Manchester United’s current signing policy . Of building for the future , with a team for the next manager , to continue United’s attack on the Premiership .
I personally as has been reported elsewhere , investigate the left back at FC Copenhagen, he look’s the real deal , from what have I have seen of him .He Bryan Oveido  is also avaliable at a transfer market price of £ 2.0 million. Leighton Baines would be brilliant at Manchester United obviously , but with a huge price tag attatched to his signature .Also none of these ‘top ‘ players like the Everton left back who is great going forward and delivers a mean dead ball , will  be content as  a bench warmer , while Evra still commands the left back spot .Also there is the minor issue of Rio Ferdinand and the relationship with Ashley Cole .I think we might be using as cover Robbie Brady or indeed Tyler Blackett as our cover and competition for Evra next season. With united’s frugal nature in the transfer market and stringent control of wage cost’s as they spiral out of control. It just appears madness to let Zeki Fryer’s contract run down  for him to sign at Tottenhan Hotspurs  and walk out on United  , to loan out the promising Fabio da Silva to QPR , with the obvious weakness’s in the left back area. I’m left to assume our manager has a plan , but I dread to think without great cover in key positions . We may  get caught cold.
It’s like most thing’s  in the top tier of the premiership , you don’t sell to  a competitor in the same league . Tell me when was the last occasion in the Premiership era , Chelsea or indeed Arsenal , Liverpool sold Manchester United a quality player, directly ? Or vice – versa !
