Two Minute Warning
Gibson to Everton, Toon chasing Carroll and Morrison?
There may only be the gentlest of breezes blowing through the transfer window, but even so, speculation is rife. And as the month trundles on, things will definitely start to happen. The Life’s A Pitch team discusses the latest rumours doing the rounds, and marks each one out of 10; 0 being fantasy, 10 being a certainty. Up for discussion: will Andy Carroll leave Liverpool, and yo-yo back to Newcastle? Will Alan Pardew take a punt on Man Utd youngster Ravel Morrison? And how likely is it that Darron Gibson will end up at Everton?
Rory Smith of The Times goes first, talking about the chances of Andy Carroll ending his Liverpool nightmare by waking up back at Newcastle. Unlikely, as it happens. “I think he will stay at Liverpool, certainly until the end of this season. He’s got eight games when Suarez is suspended to prove that he can make it as a Liverpool player – he needs to start scoring goals. And fast. I’d give that rumour a one or two out of 10.”
Next up, Ian Ridley of the Daily Express discusses Man Utd’s troubled talent, Ravel Morrison, who has also been linked with a move to Newcastle. “Alan Pardew obviously likes him, and he’s probably worth a punt. Clearly the kid’s got a lot of talent and a lot of ability, but do Newcastle want to buy someone Man Utd think is trouble? They haven’t offered him a new contract – apparently, he’s playing truant a lot from training. If Fergie can’t handle him, what will going to Newcastle – with its notorious nightlife – do for him? I’d give that a six out of 10.”
Finally, talk turns to Darron Gibson’s inevitable move to Everton, which looks like a done deal. “I think that one will happen,” says Dave Kidd of The People. “He was close to going to Sunderland with a few ex-Man Utd players in the summer, and Everton need to strengthen their squad without spending too much money. It could be a really good fit.”
