Two Minute Warning
Leeds’ sacking of Simon Grayson was “totally unfair”
As the cold winds swirl against the transfer window – firmly shut after an entire month of damp squibbery – one man now very much on the outside looking in is Simon Grayson, unceremoniously sacked by Ken Bates at Leeds United. The Life’s A Pitch team huddles around a dustbin full of fire, rubs its hands, and ponders whether giving Grayson the boot was decent business or not.
“I think it’s totally unfair given his lack of resources,” begins Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph. “I don’t think Leeds would be where they are without Simon Grayson. There was a lot of criticism flying around about his tactics, but he’s a former Leeds player, very popular with the fans. I think he needed more backing.”
Unfortunately for Grayson, Ken Bates didn’t quite provide that backing. Might the Leeds chairman have proved more of an obstacle for the young manager?
“Without a doubt,” insists Duncan White of the Sunday Telegraph. “Attendances at Leeds are falling, season tickets aren’t being renewed – there’s a real disaffection at the club, and that needs to be turned around by everyone pulling together. At the moment Ken Bates is a divisive figure.”
Of course, much talk has now turned to the various names in the mix to fill Grayson’s shoes. “Neil Warnock is the name that keeps cropping up and he’s already the bookie’s favourite,” says John Cross of the Daily Mirror. “Would he take it as a diehard Sheffield United man? I think he should.”
The magnifying glass then focuses on who else might be in the running, including Roberto Di Matteo, and Dave Jones.
