Two Minute Warning
Liverpool eye Butland, Lukaku to Fulham, Villa target Rose?
Although Premier League clubs have a growing number of scouts scouring the globe for fresh talent, a great deal of their transfer deals still involve buying from other English teams. Here, the Life’s a Pitch team runs the rule over three juicy domestic transfer rumours, judging how likely they are to take place. Will Liverpool sign Birmingham and Team GB goalkeeper Jack Butland? Is Chelsea’s misfiring Romelu Lukaku off to Fulham on loan? And is Spurs defender Danny Rose off to Aston Villa for a temporary stay?
“Butland is hot property and much talked about,” begins journalist and author Ian Ridley. “Liverpool are looking for a number two to Pepé Reina that they can bring on and develop. And it might appeal to Butland. Ultimately, it’ll be what the player wants if the fee is matched and Birmingham say they want £8m for him. Butland might see himself as a long-term goalkeeper at Liverpool, that might suit him. I think this is not a bad shout if Brad Jones is going to Norwich and there’s a vacancy at Liverpool and they are really willing to pay the money. It could be a seven [out of 10].”
According to the People’s Dave Kidd Lukaku could also be on the move, although a Chelsea to Fulham switch hardly involves much relocating. ”Fulham have made an enquiry about this. [While] Chelsea have told the player they want to give him a pre-season to try to prove himself as the type of guy who might have first-team chances, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Fulham are desperate for a target man. Lukaku is there, [although] he obviously had a poor first season and he came with a very big reputation last summer. I’d say seven out of 10, but I’m hoping Fulham might find someone a little better and a little more experienced than him.”
But what of Danny Rose’s proposed loan move to Aston Villa? the Guardian’s Dominic Fifield thinks it’s a definite possibility. ”It sounds as if he’s available on loan. A couple of clubs, Villa and West Brom, have been alerted to that reality and like many of the young players at these clubs he probably needs the games. A loan move would make sense. Danny Rose needs to establish where his best position is: whether he’s a full-back or whether he’s a winger, and to prove himself over a period of time in the Premier League. Everyone remembers the goal against Arsenal, which was stunning. But there have been too few of those. A loan move? Definitely a seven out of 10, Villa has to be up there as a possibility.”
