Oscar, Borini and Rodallega: Hit or Miss?

Another three players stand trembling before the panel, ready to be judged like cattle at a farmers’ market. Will Oscar turn out to be a prime piece of Brazilian football beef when he arrives at Chelsea? Can Fabio Borini (pictured) provide Liverpool with the subtlety and style they crave? And will Fulham live to regret signing Wigan’s Hugo Rodallega? The Life’s a Pitch panel makes the call.

The Guardian’s Dominic Fifield holds court first, taking one look at Chelsea new boy Oscar and proclaiming “he’ll be a hit!”, before backtracking slightly just in case he turns out to be rubbish. “It’s baffling how many small No10s Chelsea are buying. How they’ll all fit into the team remains to be seen,” he says. So this Brazilian might have to bide his time before burning brightly at Stamford Bridge. But burn bright he will. Probably.

Borini, Liverpool’s new signing from Roma, isn’t getting the full thumbs up from journalist and author Ian Ridley either. “Brendan Rogers knows what he’s doing and Borini fits his mould,” says Ridley before succumbing to the dark forces of doubt. “But I’m not convinced. There are big shoes to fill at Anfield. It’s a hard one to call.” In the end he climbs on to the fence and decides Liverpool’s new man “could be a hit”.

David Walker of the Sunday Mirror isn’t one for hedging his bets when it comes to Fulham’s new recruit Rodallega. “On a good day he gets people out of their seats,” he says, “but he’s not clinical enough for all the excitement he brings.” He’s the kind of striker who’ll “miss a sitter”, which really isn’t what strikers are paid to do. All of which means this transfer’s got ‘miss’ written all over it.

David Walker, hats off to you sir!
you are the first journo to see what Wigan fans have been seeing for two years. Despite being a quality player in the technical sense, Rodallega has all the striking instincts of a concussed kitten.
