Two Minute Warning
Papiss Cissé, Djibril Cissé and Nikica Jelavić: Hit or miss?
Screaming volleys, red cards and warming the bench. It’s been a real assortment of events for three of the Premier League’s newest strikers. While Newcastle United’s Papiss Demba Cissé acquainted himself to the adoring Geordie masses, Queens Park Rangers’ Djibril Cissé, already a scorer in his first match, got familiar with Roger Johnson’s face and the early bath in his second. Over at Everton, Nikica Jelavić got to meet the substitute bench against Wigan and couldn’t match the goal-scoring debuts of the Cissés. But who’ll be a hit and who’ll be a miss come the end of the season?
Newcastle’s new number nine Papiss Cissé is destined for big things, according to Tom Hopkinson of the People. “He’s a big hit already, isn’t he? What a way to announce yourself on Tyneside with a goal like that against Villa. It was a sensational strike. What’s interesting to me about Cissé is that his goal-scoring record in Germany was better than Demba Ba, who’s been a sensational signing for Newcastle. Wind those two up and watch them go for the rest of the season. I think he’ll be a big hit.”
But what about Papiss’s namesake, Djibril? He’s played in the Premier League with Liverpool and Sunderland, but will he succeed at Queens Park Rangers? The Daily Mirror’s John Cross thinks so. “It’s been a very mixed bag of a start to his career [at QPR]; he scores on his debut at Aston Villa then gets sent off in his next game. The one thing you’re going to get from Cissé is a bit of temperament, and a player who lives on the edge. He’s got a hot temper, which will also get him goals because he’s a fiery character, he’s a determined character, and that will make him a hit.”
Everton, meanwhile, bagged themselves a proven striker in Nikica Jelavić, but Ian Ridley of the Daily Express worries if the Toffees can supply him with enough chances. “He’s got the credentials; he scored 30 goals in 45 appearances for Rangers. Good value – and Everton are good at sniffing out value. He’s 6ft 2”, and they’ve needed a big striker for quite a while, so he does have the raw material. What worries me is that Everton don’t create a lot of chances, so he’s going to need to take the ones he gets. Obviously he left Rangers in a hole, but he could be a hit for Everton.”
