Two Minute Warning
Will Torres and Carroll rediscover their goalscoring touch?
Nearly one year on from their astronomical £85million double transfer, Chelsea’s Fernando Torres and Liverpool’s Andy Carroll have yielded a meagre seven Premier League goals between them. While most observers doubt they’ll last much longer at their current clubs, the Life’s A Pitch panellists look at what the future holds for Torres and Carroll, and whether they can rediscover their goalscoring touch.
The Guardian’s Dominic Fifield is hopeful for Torres after his encouraging performance in Chelsea’s win over Sunderland last weekend. “His movement was excellent and he looked a real threat,” says Dominic. “He’s playing a massive game of catch-up, in terms of his reputation at Chelsea, but there’s a real will for it still to work there. The signs are promising.”
In agreement with Dominic over Chelsea’s number nine, Tom Hopkinson of The People says: “I think he just needs a couple of goals to go in. I think he really can turn it around.” The outlook for Carroll, however, is less positive, says Tom. “Carroll, I’m not so sure,” he explains. “I’m not sure he fits into the Liverpool system, and I’m not sure he neccessarily wants to be on Merseyside. Where he goes from here, though, I just don’t know.”
Rumour has it misfit Carroll could be replaced by one of Aston Villa’s Darren Bent or Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe, but the Daily Telegraph’s Jason Burt believes a January transfer is very unlikely. “They [Liverpool] will persist with Carroll for a while now, I think,” says Jason. “They spent £35million on him and they can’t let him go for an awful lot less than that. But this time next year, I struggle to see him being at Liverpool.”
